You’ve just seen the best hairstyle ever, and you think it would look great on you. The problem is, it wasn’t in a picture, it was on someone you saw walking down the street. You go to your stylist, picturing it in your head, but you just don’t know how to explain it. It happens all the time. Talking to your stylist about the style or hair color you want is easy if you follow a few simple tips.

They say that pictures say a thousand words, and in this case, the ideal way to explain what you want is to show it to your stylist. If you can find a picture of what you want, bring it! Of course, this isn’t always possible, as in the example above. In that case, try finding photos that show different elements of what you want. For example, you might be able to find the level of curls you want, but not the exact color. Bring in what you can and explain that it lacks a few details. Pictures of what you don’t want are also important. This gives your stylist a good range to work within.

Be as detailed as you can. Use descriptive words that are as close to what you want as possible. If you want to go brunette, do you want caramel, chocolate, or a dark raven black? If you want curls, do you want smooth waves, tight curls, or loose, messy beach waves? Do you want a solid color or highlights? These are just a few examples of how to describe colors and styles more accurately. Search online for looks that are close to what you want and write down any descriptive words.

Be realistic about what you want. Most of us don’t look like runway models or movie stars, and the style we see on them may turn out a bit different on ourselves. Color can be especially tricky, since it looks best if it complements your skin tone, which may be different than the person in the picture. Realize that you can have the same style, but it may look a bit different – and that’s good, because we are all individuals, with our own individual style!

Finally, dress the part. Wear clothes that you want to look great with your style, rather than coming into the salon in sweats or workout clothes. When your outfit has the look you want, it’s easier for your stylist to match that to your hair.
