How to Keep Your Color-Treated Hair Looking Gorgeous

So you’ve just got out of the salon with your fabulous new color or highlights, and you want that look to hold on as long as possible. Proper care for color-treated hair is crucial for maintaining both the salon-fresh shade and that healthy shine. Here are a few tips that will help keep it looking beautiful.
First and foremost, follow your stylist’s recommendations. If your stylist suggested specific haircare products – get them. You’ve invested in your color, so invest in its care. Your stylist knows your hair best and can make the best recommendations for products that will keep it looking great for a long time. Most will recommend a sulfate-free shampoo, or perhaps even a dry shampoo so you have fewer washes.
Second, be sure to wait the specified time before washing. The longer you can wait, the more time you’ve given your color to fully set, which is crucial for long-lasting results. Wait at least two days, or longer if you can or if your stylist has recommended a long set time.
When you do wash, turn down the heat in the shower. Lukewarm or even cool water helps your color stay put longer. Always condition when you wash with the conditioner that was recommended by your stylist.
Care for your hair after the shower by avoiding a rough towel-drying and heated styling tools. Wrap it loosely when wet and only blow-dry when you must. Rough handling and constant heat will wear down your color.
Finally, if you’re going to hit the pool this summer, make sure you prepare your hair first. Use a cap if you can, or if not, then apply a leave-in conditioner before you swim, then rinse and pat dry afterward.
