Hair Care Tips for the Summer Heat

Hair Care Tips for the Summer Heat

Jun 13, 2018

Summer is slowly sneaking up on us, and that means summer pool parties, vacations at the beach, watersports, and many other activities that involve fun in the sun. Although we all know to apply sunscreen to protect our skin, our hair also needs protection from the great outdoors, whether it be the sun’s harmful UV rays of chlorine treatments in our swimming pools. Here are some tips from the pros to help keep your hairstyle looking fabulous and to make your hair shiny and healthy all summer long.

Keep it trimmed. Regular visits to the salon are important year-round, but damage from summer sun means that your hair is more susceptible to split ends. Split ends cause breakage, so keeping them under control is important for healthy hair.

Condition. Heat robs hair of moisture, so be sure to keep up a regular schedule of regular deep conditioning treatments, and don’t forget to use a conditioner daily at home. Ask your stylist about the best products for your hair type, as well as advice about how often to use them.

Go easy on the shampoo. Shampooing itself can dry out your hair and is usually not necessary every day. Try shampooing only a few times a week or use a dry shampoo in between showering (keep using that conditioner every day). When you do shampoo, concentrate on the scalp, where cleansing is most needed. The rest of your hair will get clean as the shampoo rinses away.

Avoid the heat. Since you’ll be spending more time in the sun, try to reduce or eliminate other sources of heat on your hair. Choose a hairstyle that requires fewer heated styling tools for the summer, or eliminate blow drying altogether. The natural look is the trend for this summer, so take advantage and keep your hair at its healthiest.

Swim smart. Swimming pools are loaded with chlorine and other chemicals to control algae and bacteria. While that’s great for the pool, it’s not good for your hair. Before swimming, saturate your hair with water or a leave-in conditioner to keep the chemicals from absorbing into your strands. Rinse or wash your hair as soon as possible after swimming, then condition again.

Summer fun doesn’t have to harm your hair! Use these tips and you’ll have smooth, silky locks all summer long.
