Summer Care for Your Color

Summer Care for Your Color

Jun 07, 2016

There’s nothing quite like a carefree summer day. Lounging in the sun, playing in the water, and dancing the night away under a warm summer sky. Unfortunately, all that carefree play means you’ll need to put a little forethought into caring for that great color or the perfect highlight you just got. Not to worry – these tips are easy and will keep you looking great all season.

At any time of the year it’s important to keep your new color well hydrated, and that’s especially true in the summer. Chances are very good that you’ll be out in the sun, swimming in a pool or at the beach, and staying out late into the night. First of all, be sure to drink lots of water to stay hydrated from the inside during the warmer weather. Next, keep your hair covered as much as possible when out in the sun. Turbans and flirty scarves are all the rage this year, and they’re great ways to be fashionably color safe.

If you know that you’ll be spending time in the water, consider investing in a swim cap. At the very least, use some leave-in conditioner to help mask your hair from the effects of chlorine and other minerals. Rinse your hair as soon as possible after swimming, too. Then, after shampooing, give your hair a cold-water rinse to help seal the cuticle.

Even if you won’t be a seasonal Esther Williams, your hair will still need some extra hydration. In between salon visits, add coconut oil to your hair care routine. Massage it into your hair and scalp for on-the-spot moisture and better color retention. An avocado hair mask is another good option. Mix a crushed avocado with a dab of honey, and some buttermilk, olive oil and lemon. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and rinse out. Argan oil is a good daily moisturizer too. It contains Vitamin E and essential fatty acids that will condition your hair and help seal in your color
