How About a Smooth (Hair) Summer

How About a Smooth (Hair) Summer

Jun 22, 2016

If you’re like the millions of naturally curly heads on the planet, summer can be a mixed blessing. Sure, it’s good fun and all, but that humidity issue can really be a downer. Even if you’re more on the wavy side than the curly one, humidity can really put a kink in your day…and your hair. Not to worry – a retexturizing treatment may be just the ticket to smooth out your summer.

Most smoothing treatments are keratin based. Keratin is a protein that is naturally present in your hair. The smoothing product uses keratin to smooth out the surface of each individual hair, and depending upon how much smoothing and straightening you want, you can choose to keep some waves or go full on straight. No matter what curl outcome you choose, your hair will be shinier and less prone to breaking, too.

A smoothing treatment will usually require about 90 minutes of your time. After a shampoo, your stylist applies the product, lets it sit for a bit, and then seals it in with a flat iron. While the product will eventually wash out, you should get anywhere from eight weeks to six months of smoothness from the treatment. You should talk to your stylist before the treatment to make sure you choose the process that’s right for you.

Your stylist will also have specific instructions for post-treatment hair care, but generally you’ll need to go easy on shampooing. Shampoos often contain detergents like sodium laureth sulfate (SLS), which is the same stuff you’ll find in your laundry detergent. It will strip out the smoothing product more quickly, and you’ll be right back in the frizzy zone.
